How to Use a Digital Caliper Correctly: Measurement Principles and Common Errors

A digital caliper is widely used for measuring outside dimensions, inside dimensions, depth, and other dimensional features. However, accurate results depend not only on the instrument, but also on how it is used.


Measurement Principle of the INSIZE 1108 Series

1. Capacitive Displacement Sensing

The INSIZE 1108 Series uses capacitive displacement sensing technology. Parallel capacitive electrode arrays are built into the main scale and sliding beam. As the slider moves, the capacitive coupling between the two electrode arrays changes periodically. The internal processor converts these capacitance signals into linear displacement data.

The 1108 Series provides a resolution of 0.01 mm / 0.0005" and supports metric/inch conversion, providing the basis for clear digital readings.

2. Automatic Power Control

The caliper automatically powers on when the slider is moved and enters sleep mode after 20 minutes without operation. It uses a CR2032 battery.


Common Digital Caliper Errors

Even with a digital caliper with a 0.01 mm resolution, incorrect operation can affect the measurement result.

1. Applying Excessive Measuring Force

When measuring plastic parts or thin-wall aluminum components, excessive clamping force can deform the workpiece and cause the reading to be smaller than the actual dimension. Long-term excessive force may also deform the measuring jaws and affect accuracy.

Tip: Apply only enough force to make stable contact with the workpiece.

2. Measuring a Cylindrical Part at an Angle

When measuring the outside diameter of a cylindrical workpiece, the caliper should be positioned across the largest cross-section. If the caliper is tilted, the measurement may be smaller than the actual diameter due to projection error. The error can reach approximately 0.02–0.05 mm in some cases.

Tip: Adjust the caliper position and find the maximum reading when measuring a cylindrical part.

3. Exposing a Non-Waterproof Caliper to Coolant or Water

The standard 1108 Series is a non-waterproof model. Cutting fluid or water mist can enter the electronic compartment and cause display or sensor problems.

4. Measuring Without Cleaning Chips and Oil

Metal chips and oil on the sliding surfaces can cause the slider to stick and may lead to zero drift or inconsistent readings.

Tip: Clean the measuring faces and sliding surfaces before measurement.

5. Measuring Immediately After a Temperature Change

Moving a caliper directly between high- and low-temperature environments can cause thermal expansion or contraction of the tool, resulting in measurement errors.

Tip: Allow the caliper and workpiece to reach a stable temperature before measurement.

6. Using the Caliper as a Tool

A digital caliper should only be used for measurement. Using it to strike a workpiece or as a wrench can deform the beam or measuring jaws and permanently affect its accuracy.

Tip: Handle the caliper as a precision measuring instrument and store it properly after use.
